Interesting Links

This is just a collection of interesting and useful (I think) links. It's loosely divided into various topics.

Safety Alerts

AOPA has published information on recent runway incursions - read them, this could happen to you, make sure it doesn't!

AOPA's recently published Safety Advisory on icing: http://www.aopa.org/asf/publications/sa11.pdf

Do you fly single pilot IFR? It's not as safe as having multiple pilots, but is it safe enough? Read this AOPA Safety Advisory on the topic: http://www.aopa.org/asf/publications/sa05.pdf.

NOTAMS and Updates

The Change Notice for Instrument Approach Plates is published 28 days after the paper charts are published.

The Published NOTAMs are available on-line.

Internet Resources for Student Pilots

This page has some links and suggestions for Internet resources for student pilots. All the links from this page go to some other Internet site. If you find any of the links are broken, please drop me an e-mail at mat@mwaugh.com telling me which link it was and I'll try and fix it.

If you have suggestions for links for this page, send them along to the same e-mail address, mat@mwaugh.com.

AOPA's Flight Training Web Site is full of information on all stages of training.

Sign up for a free 6 month subscription and free trial AOPA training membership at AOPA Flight Training Magazine. If your instructor is an AOPA member, get them to sign you up at the Instructor's AOPA Flight Training Magazine. You'll get the same benefits, plus your instructor will get something out of it as well (and perhaps they'll share).

Student pilots who have a mentor are far more likely to finish their training (so the statistics say). Use the AOPA Project Pilot page to search for a mentor in your area. Mentors can be either local or they can be remote via e-mail.

Ten Things Your Flight Instructor Wishes You Knew.

Some articles from AvWeb that you may find useful:

The AOPA Air Safety Advisory on operation at uncontrolled airports. A great detailed explanation of the traffic pattern, and how to operate in it. There is also a similar document on operation at tower controlled airports.

Obtaining a good weather briefing is both an art and a science. The FAA has published FAA-P-8740-30 describing the components of a good weather briefing and how to obtain one. A PDF version of the file is available and an interactive version is also available.

Course outline, references, syllabuses etc. from Ohio State University.

Practicing for the Knowledge Test? Here are some sites that can help you practice:

Thanks to Robert Gregory flying at Southern Jet for this additional list of sites:

Not free, but several titles from GLEIM are available for the Palm device.  Make those meetings more productive!

And a really neat flight planning site.  Download digital sectionals and WACs:

Information for CFIs

An AOPA Air Safety Foundation safety briefing on operations at uncontrolled airports. It's a great introduction to operation in the traffic pattern. There is also a similar document on operation at tower controlled airports.

This book, Controlling Pilot Error: Training & Instruction, is part of a series of books that use the ASRS reports to discuss particular areas of operation.

For pointers to other books you might find useful try Aviation Books.

Course outline, references, syllabuses etc. from Ohio State University.

The FAA Airman Certification Department provides a Part 61 FAQ in PDF format. While this is not regulatory, it is written by the people who write the regulations so if there is no legal opinion developed it's the best we've got for interpreting the regulations.

Got questions about 14 CFR Part 135 or Part 121 operations or discussions then Doc's FAR forum is good place to go.

A collection of training tools hosted by Ryan Ferguson.

An excellent article really intended for student pilots but hey, nothing says you can't point it out for them to read. Ten Things Your Flight Instructor Wishes You Knew.

Checkrides

A collection of useful information for training and getting ready for your checkride.

GPS

Here is an online guide, mainly focused on handheld GPS, for using GPS in the cockpit.

More reading about GPS - here are some suggested books.

For everything you ever wanted to know about aviation GPS, but were probably quite rightly afraid to ask, try Aviator's Guide to GPS.

If you're a VFR pilot you might want to try GPS for VFR: A practical GPS guide for VFR pilots.

A collection of Garmin "gotchas". Some of these are really not understanding the equipment and it's capabilities (and at least one seems to be based on a faulty installation) but on the other hand there's good information in there as well!

Weather Information

The NOAA map for plotting AIRMETs, SIGMETs etc.
